OUR VEGGIE GARDEN
We live on a rural property high in the hills south of Ithaca, NY. Over the past 25 years we have transformed a blank slate, formerly a hay field, into thriving vegetable, fruit and flower gardens surrounded by native meadow and forest.
Our veggie garden is large, about 100' x 100', and produces most our veggies and fruits for the year. In addition to the usual tomatoes, peas, carrots, peppers etc, we also grow staples like dried beans, corn for grinding into cornmeal, potatoes, onions, garlic, leeks and winter squash. We freeze, can, dehydrate, make jam and root cellar our produce so our garden feeds us year-round, despite our short growing season.
We are 100% organic and use only no-till methods for soil prep. NO FOSSIL FUELS are used in our garden, period. We broad-fork beds in spring to aerate soil, apply locally-produced compost to feed soil organisms, mulch deeply with old hay from a nearby farm, and sheet mulch beds in fall to get a jump start on the following spring.
We also grow all of our own fruit: apples, cherries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, currants (red, white and black), and jostaberries.
